Greek Cypriot negotiator holds meetings in New York

Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou is holding meetings in New York this week with representatives of permanent and non-permanent UN Security Council members as well as with officials of the UN Secretariat, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned.

Menelaou’s meetings are taking place in view of the discussions and the deliberations at the UN Security Council on the Cyprus issue and the resolution that will be adopted and by which the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will be renewed at the end of this month, as well as in view of the first visit to Cyprus for meetings of the UNSG’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.

The Cyprus government announced earlier this week that the UNSG’s Personal Envoy will meet in Nicosia with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, on January 30.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The l
atest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
