The government will continue to invest in fostering a democratic culture, enhancing and showcasing cultural values, a quality upgrade, promotion and presentation of Cyprus’ cultural creation and its direct contact and consultation with citizens, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Thursday evening.
President Christodoulides was addressing the annual award ceremony of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC).
Theatre greatly affects society as a whole and can shape values, perceptions and attitudes, he said adding that through theatre a revolution can begin.
“Theatre has always been a school away from school,” the President said, adding that safeguarding this is a key goal for the government.
President Christodoulides referred to the three artists who received the top three THOC awards, actor Stavros Louras who was awarded the Thoc Grand Prize, director Paris Erotokritou who has received the Creator of the Year award and musical performer Anastasia Demetriadou who was awarded Young Creator of the Year,
noting that “they left their mark and stood out with their creations and acting skills.”
Culture, he noted, is a source of education, social values and ethics. In fact, he added, “it is culture that produces politics, not the other way around.”
President Christodoulides pledged that “we will continue to invest in the cultivation of a democratic culture, in the strengthening and promotion of our cultural values, in the qualitative upgrading, promotion and presentation of our cultural creation and in direct contact and consultation with citizens, especially the citizens of tomorrow, our young people.”
“Our sole motivation is our love for our country and our goal to upgrade and exploit our cultural potential, our cultural services and activities,” he said.
