Total government employment in the period January – September 2024 increased by 1,834 persons (3.5%) compared to the corresponding period of 2023, averaging 54,044 persons.
The increase, according to the Cyprus Statistical Service, is mainly attributed to the increase of casual staff working in Education, due to the abolition of the purchase of services regime in the supporting programmes of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth as from the school year 2023-2024.
It is added that total government employment reached 52,580 persons in September 2024.
In September 2024 there were 12,003 permanent employees in the Civil Service, 4,217 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1,202 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5,905 hourly paid workers.
Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51.5%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5.2%).
On the other hand, the Educational Service empl
oyed 12,354 permanent staff, 1,021 with contracts of indefinite duration, 1,818 with contracts of definite duration and 152 hourly paid workers.
Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (80.5%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (1.0%).
The Security Forces employed 8,355 permanent staff, 4,497 with contracts of indefinite duration, 298 with contracts of definite duration and 758 hourly paid workers.
According to the Statistical Service, permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (60.1%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2.1%).
