Google to buy cyber defense firm Mandiant for $5.4B

Google announced Tuesday it signed a definitive agreement to acquire cyber defense Mandiant for $5.4 billion.

"Today, organizations are facing cybersecurity challenges that have accelerated in frequency, severity and diversity, creating a global security imperative," Google said in a statement.

It said the acquisition of Mandiant will complement Google Cloud’s existing strengths in security.

"Organizations around the world are facing unprecedented cybersecurity challenges as the sophistication and severity of attacks that were previously used to target major governments are now being used to target companies in every industry," Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in the statement.

The deal is subject to conditions, including approvals of Mandiant stockholders and regulators. It is expected to be completed later this year.

Mandiant's stock was up 3.4% before the opening bell on the Nasdaq. Google's parent firm Alphabet declined 0.2%.
