Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer of former President Donald Trump, exited an Atlanta courthouse in the US state of Georgia on Wednesday without commenting on his six-hour session before a grand jury investigating interference in the 2020 presidential election.
“It was cordial,” said Giuliani’s attorney Robert Costello after the proceedings.
Costello declined to say whether his client pleaded the fifth amendment and invoked his right against self-incrimination in the election probe.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis informed Giuliani’s attorney earlier this week that the former New York mayor was the target of the widening investigation.
“Grand juries, as I recall, are secret,” said Giuliani as he entered the courtroom Wednesday morning. “They ask the questions and we’ll see.”
Giuliani said he didn’t plan to talk about his testimony, which took place behind closed doors.
At a hearing of a Georgia state Senate subcommittee on Dec. 30, 2020, Giuliani presented a video of election workers which he claimed showed them producing “suitcases” of unlawful ballots outside the view of election poll monitors.
“There is evidence that (Giuliani’s) appearance and testimony at the hearing was part of a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere,” according to a subpoena filed in July.
The court filing also alleges that Giuliani made statements at legislative hearings in Georgia falsely claiming that there had been “widespread voter fraud” which contributed to Trump’s attempts to undermine the 2020 election.
Giuliani’s attorney said his client would decline to answer questions about any conversations with Trump.
