German ministers to visit quake-hit region in southern Türkiye

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will visit the quake-hit region in southern Türkiye, the government announced on Monday.

The ministers will visit Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras provinces on Tuesday to express solidarity with earthquakes survivors, Foreign Ministry deputy spokesperson Christian Wagner told reporters in Berlin.

He said the ministers will view earthquake relief efforts in the region, meet with representatives of the aid organisations, and also visit a visa office in Gaziantep which is processing applications from quake survivors.

At least 41,156 people were killed by the two strong earthquakes that jolted southern Türkiye on Feb. 6, officials said Monday in the latest figures from the disaster agency.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, centered in Kahramanmaras, affected more than 13 million people across 11 provinces, including Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, and Elazig.
