Paris: Seven families in France have initiated legal proceedings against TikTok, claiming that the platform’s inability to remove harmful content played a role in the suicides of two 15-year-old teenagers, as conveyed by their lawyer on Monday. The case, brought before the Creteil judicial court, alleges that TikTok’s algorithm exposed the teenagers to harmful content that encouraged suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders.
According to Anadolu Agency, the families’ lawyer, Laure Boutron-Marmion, informed France 24 that this marks Europe’s first collective lawsuit against TikTok concerning alleged harm to minors. Boutron-Marmion emphasized to Franceinfo that the families are seeking legal recognition of TikTok’s liability. She stated, “The parents want TikTok’s legal liability to be recognized. This is a commercial company offering a product to consumers, who are, in addition, minors. They must answer for the product’s shortcomings.”
This lawsuit contributes to the escalating legal challenges TikTok faces
amid increasing scrutiny over the effects of social media on mental health. In the United States, TikTok, along with Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, is also contending with lawsuits that accuse the platforms of being addictive for young users and detrimental to their mental health.
While TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment, the company has previously expressed its dedication to safeguarding the mental well-being of young users. Earlier this year, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew informed US lawmakers of the company’s investments in protective measures aimed at younger audiences.
