The Italian Boxing Federation (FPI) on Saturday said it will not accept any prize coming from the International Boxing Association (IBA) after the international organization and its president Umar Kremlev announced they would award Italy’s Angela Carini the Olympic champion prize money although she lost her welterweight round-of-16 bout against Algeria’s Imane Khelif at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
FPI said in a statement that it denied “the hypothesis of accepting any prize in money”.
The statement did not mention Carini, although federation sources claimed the boxer would also not accept the offer.
The prize consisted of $100,000, of which $50,000 would go to Carini, $25,000 to her coach and $25,000 to the Italian boxing federation (FPI), which recently left IBA to join the World Boxing Association.
