Football players urge for steps against violence in stadiums

Football players in Cyprus have warned that they will abstain from football games if measures are not taken to safeguard their security in the stadiums.

The issue was discussed on Tuesday in an extraordinary session of the Pancyprian Footballers Association (PASP).

According to a press release, issued by PASP, during the session football players of the first division expressed their concern about the unfavourable conditions in which they are forced to play.

Therefore, they decided to request a meeting of the board of directors of PASP with newly appointed Minister of Justice Marios Hartsiotis, Chief of Police Stelios Papatheodorou and the leadership of the Cyprus Football Association. In addition, they decided that during their entrance in the stadiums at the following matchday, they will hold signs with messages against violence and racism.

According to PASP, the above decisions are intended to give time in order for the necessary measures that would provide protection to them and to those inside the st
adiums to be taken.

PASP warns that if the situation does not improve, the adoption of strong measures will be discussed, not excluding the possibility of abstention from football games.
