Skopje: European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has reinforced the European Union’s commitment to the enlargement process, emphasizing that the unity of Europe is incomplete without the inclusion of the Western Balkans.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kos made these remarks at the Western Balkans leaders’ meeting on the growth plan held in Skopje. She highlighted the historic opportunity for unification presented by the enlargement process and assured that there is a consensus among EU capitals for further enlargement. This commitment includes ongoing discussions to eliminate roaming charges, which could lead to free roaming for Western Balkan countries as early as January 1, 2026, contingent on necessary reforms and legislative changes.
Kos specifically addressed North Macedonia’s EU accession prospects, underscoring the EU Commission’s political aim to initiate accession negotiations once the country meets the established criteria, particularly the constitutional amendments. She noted the challenges
involved in constitutional changes but reassured that once fulfilled, North Macedonia’s accession talks could commence immediately in an intergovernmental conference without further political hurdles.
In a related development, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto met with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic in Budapest. Szijjarto expressed a contrasting view on regional priorities through a post on X, emphasizing the security and vitality the Western Balkans bring compared to the risks associated with Ukraine, asserting that the Western Balkans are in a better state than Ukraine.
