Cyprus Deputy Minister of European Affairs Marilena Raouna attended on Monday a meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union in Brussels, which discussed the priorities of the current Belgian EU Presidency, measures to defend European democracy, the annual dialogue on the rule of law and the upcoming European elections.
In her intervention, the Deputy Minister described the priorities of the Belgian Presidency as particularly important, stressing the importance that Cyprus attaches to the issues of migration and the defense of the rule of law, as well as to the issues of the competitiveness of the EU and ways to strengthen it.
She assured that Cyprus will contribute constructively to the implementation of the priorities of the Belgian Presidency.
Regarding the defence of European democracy, the Deputy Minister referred to the measures that Cyprus has already taken to strengthen transparency and added that we will actively participate in the consultations on the relevant legislative proposa
ls.
On the rule of law Raouna stressed that it is a fundamental principle of the EU and Cyprus is ready to present the progress achieved in relation to its own report to the European Council in May.
Referring to the elections for MEPs in June, she said that Cyprus is raising awareness and wants to attract voters via campaigns.
On the sidelines of the Council and in light of the preparation for assuming the Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2026, the Deputy Minister held bilateral meetings with her counterparts of Denmark, Hungary and Poland.
She is will also meet with the Secretary General of the Council and Secretary General of the European Commission.
