President of Estonia Alar Karis expressed here today, hope that the time for Cyprus’ reunification will eventually come. President Karis, together with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and their spouses visited on Wednesday the Nicosia City Hall and walked along the buffer zone in the old city.
“Well, it is unfortunate that there is a Green Line and we don’t have one island and people can live friendly’ President of Estonia said in a short statement after the visit adding that ‘hopefully this time will come’.
The two Presidents visited the Observatory on the roof of Nicosia City Hall from where they had the opportunity to observe the Turkish-occupied part of Nicosia. Then they walked on Lidinis street along the Buffer Zone and concluded their walk by a quick visit at the CYENS Centre of Excellence.
In his statements to CNA, Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis stated that in the context of the visit, he explained to the Estonian President and the Delegation accompanying him the importance o
f the site throughout history, noting that the place has always been the centre of the city.
“We visited the Observatory in the City Hall to see with our own eyes the problem of the continued occupation. We walked on Lidinis Street and saw the Buffer Zone” he added, stressing that he explained at the same time to the President of Estonia that “very serious efforts are being made to build trust between the two communities, with the Mayor of occupied Nicosia Mehmet Harmanci”.
“A good example is the CYENS Centre of Excellence where there is daily collaboration between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots” he explained.
