Environmental activists, including Greta Thunberg, detained during protest in Netherlands

THE HAGUE: Hundreds of environmental activists, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, were detained during climate protest in the Netherlands on Saturday. The demonstration near The Hague was organized by the Extinction Rebellion movement to demand an end to the use of fossil fuels. Hundreds of people blocked the A12 highway, a crucial entryway into the city, and an intersection in front of the temporary parliament building, causing disruptions to traffic routes. Protesters advocating for the cessation of oil, coal, and gas usage criticized the new government's fossil fuel policies. The group said on X that with fossil subsidies, the Netherlands is responsible for forest fires all over the world and especially in the Global South. On the arrests, the movement said 'no matter how many times we are taken away, we keep coming back' and that their demand to stop fossil fuel subsidies immediately is 'reasonable and just.'
