Flores: The death toll from a volcanic eruption on Indonesia’s Flores Island has risen to 10, local media reported on Monday. The eruption occurred on Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, leading to devastating consequences for the nearby communities.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency reported that lava flows reached a nearby village, destroying several buildings, including a monastery. Among the deceased is a nun, while one person remains missing. Rescue teams are actively searching for additional victims under the collapsed structures.
The eruption has affected at least 10,000 people across six villages in the Wulanggitang district and four in the Ile Bura district. The region has endured a series of eruptions over the past week, prompting authorities to raise the alert level for Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki to its highest. The volcano has been releasing thick brown ash columns reaching up to two kilometers (1.24 miles) into the sky each day since last week.
