Daily cannabis use surpasses daily alcohol use in US: Study

ISTANBUL: Daily cannabis use in the US has surpassed daily alcohol consumption, according to a new study. In the research published on Wednesday in the journal Addiction, daily alcohol consumption and marijuana use across the country were examined, using data from the US National Survey on Drug Use and Health. In 2022, nearly 17.7 million people used cannabis daily or near daily compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily alcohol drinkers, according to the study. 'Long-term trends in cannabis use in the United States parallel corresponding changes in cannabis policy, with declines during periods of greater restriction and growth during periods of policy liberalization. A growing share of cannabis consumers report daily or near-daily use and their numbers now exceed the number of daily and near-daily drinkers,' the study said. According to the research, which is based on data between the years 1979 and 2022, cannabis use reached its lowest level in 1992. There was a 15-fold increase in the per capita rat e of reporting daily or nearly daily cannabis use from 1992 to 2022. Source: Anadolu Agency
