Cyprus – Slovenia FMs discuss bilateral ties, Cyprus issue, international affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos paid on Friday a working visit to Slovenia at the invitation of his Slovenian counterpart Tanja Fajon, during which they discussed about the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations and international issues like the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

According to a Foreign Affairs Ministry press release, the two Ministers held a tete a tete meeting followed by extensive consultations with the participation of delegations from the two Ministries. During the talks, they discussed about bilateral relations and ways to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries, the cooperation of the two countries at the level of MED9, issues related to the European agenda including enlargement and the situation in the Western Balkans, as well as preparations ahead of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs briefed his counterpart on the current developments in the Cyprus issue, conveying the readiness of the
government of Cyprus to resume talks with the aim of achieving a sustainable solution, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as provided by the relevant UNSC resolutions.

He also thanked Fajon for the position of principles that Slovenia maintains in the Cyprus issue and expressed belief that Cyprus and Slovenia will cooperate closely within the framework of Slovenia’s status as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the current period.

They also exchanged views about the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The two Ministers condemned Hamas’ terrorist attacks against Israel and focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to protect all civilians. In this context, Kombos informed his counterpart about the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza.

Following their consultations, the two Ministers made statements to the press.

os was received by President of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar, as well as President of the National Assembly Urška Klakocar Zupancic. During the meetings, the press release says, they confirmed the excellent level of bilateral relations as well as the willingness of both sides to further strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral level.
