Cyprus ready to strengthen ILO’s social justice initiative, says Labour Minister

Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Yiannis Panayiotou underlined Cyprus' readiness to strengthen the initiative of the International Labour Organization (ILO) on social justice during his meeting on Tuesday with ILO's Director-General, in the context of his participation in the 111th Annual Labour Conference.

According to a Labour Ministry press release, Panayiotou referred to the long-standing relations of the Republic of Cyprus with the organisation, stressing the importance of the technical assistance provided by ILO, which laid the foundation for the Social Insurance Fund.

He also noted that Cyprus considers the ILO as an important impartial strategic partner and described the expertise provided by the Agency in the context of the Social Insurance Fund reforms as very important.

With regard to the ILO's initiative for a Global Coalition for Social Justice, the Minister of Labour underlined Cyprus' readiness to contribute to raising awareness on social justice and to promote the initiative's thematic priorities in the region.

ILO Director General welcomed Cyprus' willingness and readiness and agreed to promote concrete ways to strengthen cooperation in this context, the press release concludes.
