Cyprus President to address Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will be addressing the plenary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on January 23rd, according to the agenda of the 2024 Winter Session of the body which will be held from the 22nd to the 26th of January in Strasbourg.

The agenda of the Winter Session of the meeting of representatives from the parliaments of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe (which is not an EU institution, but is the institution which runs the European Court of Human Rights) will include debates on recent developments in the Middle East after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel and Israel’s response, as well as on allegations of systemic torture in places of detention in Europe. A request has also been made for a debate under urgent procedure on the situation of the children of Ukraine.

President Christodoulides will be addressing the PACE plenary on Tuesday January 23rd at 14:30 (local time) and will respond to questions by members.

Milatovic will also address members on Tuesday, followed on Wednesday by the Prime Minister of Liechtenstein, Daniel Risch.

A relevant announcement notes that at the opening of the session, the Assembly will elect its President. During the session parliamentarians will also elect the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights.
