The Cyprus issue, relations between Cyprus and the US, the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine and the Amalthea initiative were on the agenda of a meeting President Nikos Christodoulides had on Friday with a delegation of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a written statement that the meeting was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos, Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Piki, Deputy Minister of European Affairs, Marilena Rauna and Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President Doros Venezis. The US delegation comprised of Ivo H. Daalder, P. Zachary Egan, J. Douglas Gray, Alex Kruzel, Alex Pissios, Michael E. Werner, Endy Zemenides and Penny Sebring. Letymbiotis said that the Council is an independent, non-profit Organization, which deals widely with international issues, such as, the Cyprus issue, issues related to the international ties and US foreign policy. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Tur key invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguín last January as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
