The House of Representatives is set to mark the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the European Union with a series of special events on Friday, May 10.
According to a statement released by the House, the commemorative activities will be attended by foreign dignitaries including President of the Maltese House of Representatives Angelo Farrugia, First Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament Ioannis Plakiotakis, Vice-President of the Lithuanian Parliament Radvile Morkunaite-Mikuleniene, and Vice-President of the National Assembly of Slovenia Danijel Krivec, following an official invitation by House President Annita Demetriou.
The day will kick off with a special plenary session of the House at 10:00 am (local time), featuring speeches by House President Annita Demetriou, parliamentary party leaders or representatives, and independent MPs. Notable attendees will include among others, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, and Cypriot Members of the European Parliamen

Following this, at 11:30 am, a celebratory seminar will take place at the Cyprus Theatre Organization (THOC) building. The seminar will open with remarks by House President and will feature video messages from President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the First Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ioannis Plakiotakis, and the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides. A round-table discussion on the achievements, challenges, and future prospects of EU member states, focusing on the role of parliaments, will follow with the participation of the President of the House, the President of the Maltese Parliament, and the Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of Greece, Lithuania, and Slovenia.
The day’s events will be accompanied by the Symphonic Orchestra of Youth, with visual presentations highlighting Cyprus’ 20-year journey within the EU. The seminar will conclude with an award ceremony honouring high school students who participated in an essay competition on the theme
of Cyprus’ EU accession.
As part of their visit, guests will also tour the ceasefire line, guided by House President Demetriou, and will sign the House’s visitors’ book.
