Cyprus MP condemns offensive actions against places of worship


Cyprus parliamentarian Rita Superman, Special Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on the fight against terrorism and organized crime participated in the 3rd Parliamentary Strategy Dialogue on the fight against terrorism, organized by the UN Office for Combating Terrorism, in Istanbul Thursday.

The main topic of discussion was about the terrorist threats against vulnerable groups and the challenges regarding the protection of religious sites, symbols and objects.

A press release by the Parliament says that Superman condemned any kind of offensive action against places of worship and underlined the need to promote actions to eliminate stereotypes and intolerance, which reproduce the cycle of violence. She said that peace and security can only prevail if we first seek mutual understanding, tolerance and mutual respect among the societies all over the world.

She also said that Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean functions as a platform for inter-parliamentary dialogue and is a
n excellent example of good cooperation between the countries of the Mediterranean.

The Cyprus deputy also said that the Assembly is ready to promote the implementation by its Member Parliaments of specialized guides for the protection of particularly vulnerable groups from terrorist attacks, which was prepared by the UN Office for Combating Terrorism.
