Greek Foreign Affairs Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis has told UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar that the Cyprus problem is an issue of the utmost priority for Greece and that the country full supports her efforts.
Gerapetritis had a meeting in Athens on Tuesday morning with Holguin.
During their meeting, Minister Gerapetritis highlighted the priority that Greece attaches to the Cyprus problem, as well as its systematic effort in international forums for the resumption of the dialogue between the parties.
According to the Greek Foreign Ministry, during the meeting, Gerapetritis “stressed that the Cyprus problem is an issue of the utmost priority for Greece, which fully supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy.”
“In this context, Greece is working systematically in all international forums, looking forward to the launch of a dialogue between the parties with the aim of a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizona
l, bicommunal federation and within the framework of the resolutions and decisions of the United Nations Security Council,” the Ministry’s statement concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguin in January as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
