Cyprus also expects the country that holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU to fully support the principle of not compromising with the aggressor, Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos, said while pointing to Cyprus’ own support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Kombos was speaking ahead of the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the EU taking place in Brussels on Monday. The agenda of the meeting included the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East and digital diplomacy.
Regarding Ukraine, Kombos said that ‘we will be reaffirming our full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine’ as this is what is dictated by international law and required by the values of the EU, ‘even more so for the Republic of Cyprus, itself a victim of aggression.’
‘In this difficult time, just two days after the 50th anniversary, the dark anniversary of the Turkish invasion, we remain fully committed to making sure that we are not compromising with the aggressor an
d we are not appeasing the aggressor’ and products of aggression, he noted.
‘On that, we are fully appreciative of the full support of our fellow member states’ he continued, pointing out that ‘the same is expected from the holder of the presidency of the Council’, referring to Hungary.
‘This is what the role requires. It requires performing the task in accordance with the principles of unity and sincere cooperation and representing all the views of all the member states’ the Minister underlined.
