The further strengthening of relations between Cyprus and China in the field of justice was decided during a meeting on Tuesday at the Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus.
The meeting was attended by the heads of the Legal Service, Attorney-General and Deputy Attorney General, George Savvides and Savvas Angelides respectively, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, and the Assistant General Prosecutor of the People’s Republic of China, Chen Guoqing, accompanied by a delegation of Chinese officials.
Two General Prosecutors from Chinese provinces, as well as the Ambassador of China to Cyprus, Liu Yantao, were also present.
According to a Legal Service press release, the meeting took place in the context of the cooperation between the two countries in the field of justice and the exchange of information on the operation of the prosecutorial system.
Attorney General Savvides, welcomed the Chinese delegation and provided a detailed presentation on the role, responsibilities, and powe
rs of the Attorney General in Cyprus. The discussion focused particularly on the fight against cybercrime, child pornography, and the spread of false information online.
Chen expressed his gratitude for the hospitality and praised the traditionally close relations between Cyprus and China. He also explained the role of China’s Prosecution Service, which employs 220,000 staff, of whom 70,000 are prosecutors. He emphasised the importance of judicial cooperation between the two countries, especially on asset freezing and confiscation issues. He also extended an official invitation to Cypriot officials to visit the Prosecution Service of China in 2025.
It was noted that during the meeting, “the further strengthening of relations and the exchange of visits between the two countries at various levels were agreed upon”.
