Cyprus is one of the countries with the largest ratios of refugees from Ukraine that have received temporary protection in the EU after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, hosting 20.7 people per 1,000 inhabitants, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the EU.
According to the latest data up to 30 November 2023, 4.27 million non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine as a consequence of the Russian invasion on 24 February 2022, had temporary protection status in EU countries.
By the end of November, 19,080 people had received temporary protection status in Cyprus, having increased by 445 people compared to October 2023 (18,635 persons).
Out of these people, 3.585 were adult men, 10,425 were adult women, and 5.070 were children younger than 18 years old.
Cyprus also had one of the largest ratios of people fleeing Ukraine and receiving temporary protection status, with 20.7 per 1000, compared to the EU average of 9.5 per 1000.
The main EU countries hosting beneficiaries of temporary protec
tion from Ukraine were Germany (1,235,960 people; 28.9% of total EU), Poland (955,110; 22.3%) and Czechia (369,330; 8.6%).
Compared with the end of October 2023, the largest absolute increases in the number of beneficiaries were observed in Germany (+20,595; +1.7%), Czechia (+4,880; +1.3%), and Norway (+4,180; +6.9%).
Among all EU countries, the number of beneficiaries decreased slightly in four countries, namely Poland (-5,510 people; -0.6%), Italy (-160 people; -0.1%), France (-125 people; -0.2%), and Luxembourg (-15 people; -0.4%).
The data refers to the attribution of temporary protection status based on a decision taken by the Council of the EU in March 2022. In September 2023, the decision was taken to extend this status until March 2025.
Also, on 30th November 2023, Ukrainian citizens represented over 98% of the beneficiaries of temporary protection. Adult women made up almost half (46.3%) of temporary protection beneficiaries in the EU. Children accounted for almost one-third (33.3%), while adult
men comprised slightly more than a fifth (20.4%) of the total.
