Cyprus aims at zero deaths in the sea

The government has drawn up an action plan that aims at zero deaths in the sea (drowning and marine accidents). The plan is being implemented in cooperation with “Safe Water Sports” NGO, based in Greece.

Based on figures presented on Thursday during a press conference on the occasion of the National Day for the Prevention of Drowning and Maritime Accidents, an average of 30 drowning deaths are recorded in Cyprus every year. The majority of the victims are elder citizens.

Minister of Health Michael Damianos, addressing the event noted the importance of raising awareness and proper information which can lead to a significant reduction of accidents in the sea and drownings.

According to the figures of the Ministry, presented by Eliza Karabetian-Nikotian on behalf of “Safe Water Sports”, there were a total of 436 drowning deaths over a period of 19 years (2004-2022). The majority of the victims were citizens over 60 years old, most were men (302) while 134 were women.

A total of 24 men and 6 women lost their
lives in 2022. The action plan includes the operation of an observatory mechanism which will collect and analyse figures. The system will include registered professionals and licensed companies in marine sports, violations and fines, lifesaving incidents and rescues.

“Safe Water Sports” NGO has an app that can be downloaded on cell phones, in Greek and English, with useful information on beaches, lifeguard surveillance, companies that offer marine activities, as well as safety regulations for swimming and other sea activities.

Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Pikis said during the press conference that the action plan also includes the operation of a port police information system and a safe swimming programme for children up to 12 years old, in which 250 children have already participated.

She said that bills have been tabled to the parliament that include the operation of swimming pools and the safe use of boats, while another one for the recreational diving services is being assessed by the legal
service.
