Some of the best wines from Greece and Cyprus were presented at events organised in London by '50 Great Greek Wines' (50 GGW) earlier this week, under the auspices of the Greek Tourism Organisation. 50 GGW is a body of experts proclaiming the fifty best wines in Greece, and as of this year Cyprus as well, every 18 months or so. The events in London featured 33 awarded wineries, who exhibited around 150 labels to British Masters of Wine, sommeliers, specialised journalists, importers, market distributors and consumers. 50 GGW's founder Yiannis Karakasis told the Cyprus News Agency during a walk-around tasting event in Soho that 'the UK has been identified as a significant market for Greek wine a d we invest in it by communicating this image of a very high quality wine.' Cyprus was represented by four wineries included in the latest 50 GGW list of awarded wines. Michalis Constantinides of Ézousa Winery in Paphos told CNA that their presence their was aimed at possibly closing a deal with a UK importer. He added that it was clear to him that there is ground for a wider presence of Greek/Cypriot wine in the British market. Makarounas Vineyards producer Theodoreos Makarounas, from Paphos as well, commented that events such as the ones organised are what is needed for Cypriot wines to become better known to the British, outside the populous UK Cypriot community. Ektoras Tsiakkas of Tsiakkas Winery in Limassol took part with four labels, noting that wines from the Mediterranean are being heard and recognised more in markets such as the UK one. Vouni Panayia wines from Paphos were represented by Yiannis Kyriakidis, who said that his produce is sold in 12 countries, but that the UK market 'is a very big one and one with influence over others.' The Cypriot varieties presented in London were Xynisteri, Morokanella, Maratheftiko, Promara, Vamvakada, Spourtiko and Yiannoudi. Source: Cyprus News Agency
