Seventy-one pupils and teachers of Nicosia English School have been stranded in a hotel in Switzerland due to a landslide that occurred on Saturday evening at the border with Italy. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Theodoros Gotsis told the Cyprus News Agency on Sunday that the students and those who accompany them are stranded in their hotel in Switzerland due to the bad weather conditions that hit the country in its southern border with Italy. He said that the students are in Switzerland on a school trip and are safe in a hotel with all their needs being met. Gotsis noted that there are difficulties as regards electricity supply and moving around in the area due to the landslide and heavy rains. He noted that the Swiss authorities are working to restore traffic as soon as possible. He underlined that the Embassy of Cyprus in Rome, which is accredited in Switzerland, is handling the issue since the very beginning. In addition, he said that there is constant communication with those in charge of the school trip and representatives of the parents, while contacts have also been made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos. Gotsis noted that there is no cause for concern and that it is expected that the problem will be resolved as soon as possible, so that the pupils and their escorts will be able to return to Cyprus safely.
