President Nikos Christodoulides and King of Jordan Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein discussed on Friday developments in the Middle East as well as initiatives to de-escalate the crisis during a meeting they had on the sidelines of the MED9 Summit, which is taking place in the coastal town of Paphos.
In a written statement, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis says that during the meeting, President Christodoulides and the King of Jordan discussed at length the developments in the region as well as further initiatives that can be taken together towards deescalating the crisis.
They reaffirmed the excellent relations between Cyprus and Jordan and the need for closer cooperation between the European Union and Jordan.
The King of Jordan is participating in the MED9 Summit, at the invitation of President Christodoulides. The Summit will discuss issues of common concern. President Christodoulides praised the role that Jordan plays in the region, and referred to the joint Cyprus-Jordan initiative for the c
reation of a regional forest firefighting center based in Cyprus with a permanent presence of aerial means, something that – if implemented – will not only act as a catalyst in addressing crises in the region, but also be a tangible proof of regional cooperation and its perspective for the entire region.
The two leaders, Letymbiotis notes, “underlined the great importance of Jordan’s presence at the Summit, especially during this critical time for our wider region, and expressed the hope for concrete and tangible actions that can be jointly taken.”
