The Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC) strongly supports the “Amalthea” initiative of Cyprus that sends humanitarian aid to the civilians in Gaza through a maritime corridor.
A press release by the House of Representatives says that the conclusions of the 71st COSAC, that took place 24-26 of March at the European Parliament, included an amendment submitted by the the Cypriot delegation for the strong support of COSAC to the “Amalthea” plan.
The House of Representatives was represented at the Conference by Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs Harris Georgiades (head) and MPs Marina Nicolaou, Chrysis Pantelides and Kostis Efstathiou
In his intervention at the discussion on open strategic autonomy, Efstathiou underlined the need for the EU to finally adopt a leader mentality, which can only be achieved through its independence from third parties to meet its defence needs, so that the European continent does not become a field of confrontation be
tween the great powers.
Pantelides in his intervention recalled that Turkey, for 50 years now, illegally occupies territory of the Republic of Cyprus, which in the last 20 years is also territory of the EU, and said that despite the fact that Cyprus is being occupied, EU countries sell weapons and military equipment to the occupying force, which is Turkey in the context of bilateral commercial cooperation, which surpasses any contractual cooperation in the framework of NATO.
The press release says that the Conference adopted its contribution to the EU Institutions as well as its conclusions, which include an amendment by the Cypriot delegation for the strong support of COSAC to the “Amalthea” project to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the maritime corridor from Cyprus.
