Consultations are under way in Brussels on adding a reference to EU – Turkey relations in the conclusions of the upcoming European Council summit, CNA learns.
According to diplomatic sources, Germany has proposed adding a reference to EU – Turkey relations in the conclusions, following the Joint Communication by the High Representative and the European Commission issued on November 2023 (‘Borrell report’) regarding relations with the country. An EU source confirmed that the issue has indeed been put on the table, and that consultations are ongoing.
CNA learns that Cyprus and Greece are asking for the right conditions to be in place before these issues are added to the agenda. Cyprus reportedly focuses on the content of the text to be added as well as the discussion which will take place.
The report on EU – Turkey relations was originally due to be discussed by leaders in December. However, due to various developments, this discussion has been postponed several times. Although there have been discussions ab
out adding it to the programme of the 21 – 22 March meeting, this has so far not been possible due to the heavy agenda of the summit.
