CING researchers study beneficial properties of Greek sage for Alzheimer’s

A group of researchers from the Neurogenetics Department of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics has studied the beneficial properties of Greek sage extracts in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease.

According to the CING January newsletter due to their beneficial properties for human health, medicinal plants constitute a large reservoir that can be explored to find extracts or chemicals with strong neuro-protective potential, which will effectively stand against the neuro-toxicity caused by beta-amyloid accumulation.

It is added that the presence of such an effect combined with a significant antioxidant capacity may define some medicinal plants as potential sources for the development of drugs or foods that will have the potential to act therapeutically against Alzheimer’s disease.

“Our findings validate further the neuro-protective potential of Greek sage and support its use as an antioxidant” the authors say.

They add that these specific properties make Greek sage a potential source for obtainin
g extracts or bio-active substances for the production of formulations that will have beneficial properties against Alzheimer’s disease.

The research has been published in the scientific journal Plants under the title “Chemical Profiling and Antioxidant and Anti-Amyloid Capacities of Salvia fruticosa Extracts from Greece”.
