Ukrainians still underground with fear of Russian airstrikes in capital Kyiv

Some families in the capital Kyiv are still in shelters at metro stations and cannot go back to their homes since Feb. 24 due to the fear of Russian airstrikes.

Since the beginning of Russian airstrikes in Kyiv, thousands of Ukrainians have taken shelter at the metro station.

Even though the number of airstrikes decreased and the evacuation began, some families kept seeking shelter underground.

Footages by the Anadolu Agency team in the field showed difficult conditions in the Dorohozhychi station that families face.

Some 50 Ukrainians, mostly women and children, stay at the Dorohozhychi station, which sets another example of the difficult situation for the families.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency reporter, Taria Blazhevych, whose husband is fighting against Russia, came to the metro station with her two children after the start of the attacks.

Saying that they have been staying there for more than two weeks, she stated that they need a safer place.

“I’m here because I’m afraid to be in my home because it’s dangerous. On the second day of the war, we woke up and saw a (war) plane near our house,” she added.

Mentioning that these stations are the safest places to take shelter in the capital, she noted that her mother also faces difficulties as she has cancer and needs chemotherapy.

“It feels normal for children to be here because they don’t understand what war is. In the evenings, all children here gather and play together. They laugh,” added Blazhevych.

Saying that the tent does not protect them from the cold weather, she stated that they got sick twice since they started to live underground.

Since Russia launched its war on Ukraine, more than 2.69 million people have fled to other countries, according to UN estimates.

At least 596 civilians have also been killed and 1,067 injured in Ukraine, it said.

While the European Union, the US and others have imposed sanctions on Moscow, many companies and global brands have also suspended operations in Russia.

UK, US, France, Germany condemn Russia’s ‘barbaric action’

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the leaders of France, Germany and the US on Monday condemned Russia’s “barbaric action and expressed their ongoing solidarity with the people of Ukraine,” said a statement from Johnson’s office.

“They discussed the military and political situation on the ground and agree that any future negotiations on Ukraine’s future would have to put the needs and wishes of Ukrainians first,” it said.

Johnson and the other leaders “agreed to continue to apply pressure on Russia to isolate (Russian President Vladimir) Putin diplomatically and economically.”

He also “stressed that our goal must be ensuring Putin’s failure in this act of aggression against Ukraine,” the statement said.

Johnson and US and French presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz “agreed to continue meeting in this format in the days ahead.”

Johnson also hosted his Canadian and Dutch counterparts in London on Monday.

He will meet with the leaders of the Visegrad Group, a cultural and political alliance of four countries of Central Europe — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger.

The leaders are expected to discuss Ukraine and European security as well as energy and cybersecurity.

Russia’s war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial sanctions on Moscow, and spurred an exodus of global firms from Russia. The West has also imposed biting export restrictions on key technologies that are now prohibited from being sent to Russia.

At least 406 civilians have been killed and 801 others injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, according to UN figures. But the international body has maintained that conditions on the ground have made it “difficult to verify” the true number of civilian casualties.

NATO increases presence in eastern part of alliance: Stoltenberg

NATO has increased its presence in the eastern flank of the alliance and it is set to deploy its response force for the first time in its history, the alliance chief announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said: “We have increased our presence in eastern part of the alliance and today we are, for the first time in our history, deploying the NATO Response Force. Today French troops are arriving in Romania as the lead elements of this force.”

This came as the Russia-Ukraine war entered its sixth day on Tuesday, with the latest reports indicating that Russian troops were heading toward the capital Kyiv.

Last week on Thursday, NATO decided to activate its defense plans enabling it to deploy capabilities and forces more easily in NATO territory.

Stoltenberg also stressed that the military alliance “is not going to be part of the conflict.”

“So, NATO is not going to send troops into Ukraine or planes into Ukrainian airspace,” he added.

So far, at least 136 civilians, including 13 children, have been killed in Ukraine and 400 others, including 26 children, injured, according to UN figures.
