California governor endorses Harris for president

WASHINGTON: California Gov. Gavin Newsom endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee after President Joe Biden dropped out from the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday.

“Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris,” Newsom said on X.

His remarks came after Biden announced that he is dropping out of the race and throwing his support behind Harris.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also endorsed Harris, saying he will do everything he can to help elect her as the 47th president.

Biden’s candidacy has been in the spotlight following his dismal performance against former President Donald Trump in a presidential debate late last month.

Facing mounting pressure, Biden, 81, said in a letter posted on social media that it has been “the greatest honor” of his life to serve as p
resident.

‘And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he added.
