The Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday the new revised housing plans for the revitalization of remote, mountainous, and disadvantaged areas and specific rural areas, as well as the allowances to support the residents of mountainous and remote areas. In statements to journalists after the Cabinet meeting, Interior Minister, Konstantinos Ioannou, said that the plans concern housing schemes to provide financial support for the acquisition of housing in mountainous or disadvantaged areas and specific rural areas, which were implemented "with great success by the previous government in 2019." The Minister noted that since the start of their implementation until today, 1,500 applications have been approved corresponding to a financial aid of 55 million euro, while approximately 14,000 eligible households, corresponding to 29,500 people, have benefited in 2023 with a total value of 7.5 million euro. He noted that despite the very encouraging response of citizens and the amendments in previous years, the M inistry has received many suggestions and proposals to improve the schemes in a way that maximises the benefit for the beneficiaries and solves problems that have become apparent over time. Ioannou added that as a result, they decided, following consultations, to make further changes so that more people can benefit and to make them more attractive to citizens. The plan is being extended until December 31, 2025 and is being converted into a two-year scheme to give those interested enough time to secure the necessary planning and building permits that are required for the applications.
