Cyprus' Council of Ministers has approved the country's Smart Specialisation Strategy (SSS) for the period 2023-2030, following a proposal by Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Philippos Hadjizacharias. According to an announcement, the SSS identifies and analyses the priority sectors where Cyprus has a competitive advantage and can be foci of economic development and improve the quality of life of citizens, through investments in Research and Innovation (R and I). It is added that the SSS is part of the national Strategy for R and I of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy which is in the final stages of its preparation, and is an ex-ante conditionality for the utilisation of resources from the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) in the R and I sector. The priority areas that have been highlighted through the SSS for the period 2023-2030 are divided into four units. The first one concerns technological priority areas and includes digital technologies and innovative materials. The second concerns ecosystems and includes the sectors of agri-food, shipping and renewable energy sources. The third unit concerns emerging ecosystems and, currently, only includes the space sector. The last one concerns enablers and includes the health and environment sectors.
