The Pafos Assize Court sentenced on Monday British 76 year old David Hunter to a two-year imprisonment on the count of manslaughter. Hunter, who already has been in custody since 2021 when he killed his wife Janice in their home in Trimithousa, was therefore allowed to walk free for time served based on the calculations of the Prisons Department. He had been in prison from the date of his wife's death in December 2021. Delivering the decision, President of the Court Michalis Droushotis referred to the fact that the defendant did not have a criminal record, his advanced age and in general his personal circumstances but above all the particular circumstances under which he committed the crime, as well as the motives of his unlawful behaviour. The message to society, he said, cannot be other than the fact that taking the life of a human being, even if motivated by love for the victim and redemption from her suffering, is an illegal act under the Law which is not tolerated, even in the event that the victim herself desires her redemption. The President of the Assize Court noted that Law and ethics form the "backbone" of a society adding that in this context, no one chooses when to end a person's life, even the life of a loved one who is in pain due to health problems.
