A thunderstorm warning issued on Monday by the Meteorology Department is in effect until 22:00 on Wednesday as Cyprus is experiencing the effects of a low-pressure system named “Avgi” affecting the region until Thursday.
The warning predicts rain and locally strong storms, expected to impact mainly the northern half and eastern areas of the island intermittently. Additionally, hail is likely during thunderstorms.
Rainfall intensity is anticipated to range between 55 and 70 millimetres per hour.
In a separate statement, the Cyprus Department of Meteorology emphasises that in all cases with a possibility of rain, authorities and citizens responsible for drainage systems must inspect and clear them to avoid water accumulation.
The weather on Wednesday is expected to be cloudy with local showers, isolated thunderstorms, and snowfall in mountainous areas. Hail is possible during thunderstorms, and snowfall may be temporarily heavy.
Temperature-wise, it will reach 13 degrees Celsius inland, around 16 in the s
outhern and eastern coastal areas, approximately 14 in the western and northern coastal areas, and 2 degrees Celsius in higher mountainous regions. Icy conditions are expected in the mountains and locally in the semi-mountains.
