Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers Discuss Peace Agreement Implementation in Antalya

Antalya: Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met on the sidelines of Trkiye’s Antalya Diplomacy Forum. The meeting focused on the normalization process following the finalization of the Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations between the two countries.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting that both parties discussed the current state of affairs regarding the peace agreement and expressed their willingness to continue the dialogue. The historical normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia began after the fall 2020 Karabakh War, as stated by Bayramov during a panel discussion.

Last month, Azerbaijan and Armenia reached an agreement on the text of a peace treaty. Bayramov mentioned that the next stage involves implementing the agreement, which will lead to the finalization of the process. He emphasized the importance of making necessary amendments to Armenia’s Constitution to regulate land claims and praised Trkiye’s role in the region, particularly in restoring transportation links.

Mirzoyan echoed Bayramov’s sentiments, affirming that the peace agreement would bring prosperity to the region by removing existing obstacles. Trkiye, which has been a long-time supporter of Azerbaijan’s efforts, hosted the Antalya Diplomacy Forum to facilitate such discussions.

The tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan date back to 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Karabakh and surrounding regions. Most of these territories were liberated by Azerbaijan during a 44-day war in 2020, which concluded with a Russian-brokered peace agreement. In September 2023, Azerbaijan achieved full sovereignty in Karabakh following the surrender of separatist forces. On March 13, both countries announced their consensus on all 17 articles of the peace deal.
