A divided country cannot fit into the future, says Spokesman

Our main concern, as declared by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is to work with all our strength to achieve a solution for an independent and truly sovereign state, free from any anachronistic guarantees and the presence of occupying troops, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Sunday.

Addressing the memorial service of the fallen heroes of the Emba community, he also said that a divided, occupied homeland cannot fit into the future.

“We are working to end the occupation, the reunification of our homeland through the achievement of a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem,” Letymbiotis said.

He went on to assure that the government’s “highest goal is none other than the reunification of Cyprus”, adding that “we remain firmly committed to a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions, with one sovereignty, one citizenship, one international identity, always in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, the European acqui
s and of course the principles and values on which the European Union is founded”.

He further said that with “undiminished dedication we will continue to expend every ounce of our forces in building a Cyprus that will be a symbol of peace, stability and progress in the region”.

Referring to the division of the island, he said that 50 years is dangerously many.

He added that a divided, occupied country cannot be part of the future but we envision hope and perspective for the next generations.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed Holguín in January as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
