Azerbaijan advises citizens against traveling to Iran

Azerbaijan on Tuesday issued a travel advisory for its citizens against traveling to Iran after a deadly embassy attack in Tehran last week.

“Due to the unstable situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the terrorist attack against the diplomatic mission of our country, the citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan are advised not to visit the Islamic Republic of Iran unless necessary,” said a statement by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

The statement also said those who visit Iran are advised to exercise increased caution.

“Citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan who are currently in the Islamic Republic of Iran are advised to observe safety and security rules,” it further said.

On Friday, a gunman, wielding a Kalashnikov rifle, barged inside the Azerbaijani Embassy premises in Tehran and opened fire, killing the security chief of the embassy and injuring two guards. The armed attack drew strong condemnation worldwide.

On Sunday, Baku evacuated 53 people, including diplomats working at the embassy and their family members.

Swiss men have longest life expectancy in the world: OECD

Switzerland has the highest male life expectancy in the world, according to recent figures by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

A boy born in Switzerland in 2021 has a life expectancy of 81.9 years, the OECD said.

Switzerland is followed closely by Iceland, Norway, and Japan.

The current life expectancy for women in Switzerland is 85.6 years and for men 81.6 years.

The number of centenarians has increased in Switzerland in recent years. The country registered 377 centenarians in 1990, while 787 in 2000, and the number currently stands at 1,888, the daily Le Matin Dimanche reported.

"Demographers estimate that every second child born in Switzerland after 2000 will live to be a hundred," Daniela Jopp, a professor leading a study on centenarians in Switzerland at the University of Lausanne, told Le Matin Dimanche.

According to Stephane Cullati from the University of Fribourg, there is a correlation between education level and average life expectancy.

"The differences in life expectancy between university graduates and those who completed basic education are considerable, especially for men," the researcher told the Swissinfo news channel.

"In 1994, the difference between the two was 7.6 years. Today, university graduates live 8.8 years longer in good health," Cullati added.

Australian police arrest over 600 domestic violence offenders in 4-day operation

Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state police on Tuesday said that they have arrested over 600 domestic violence offenders during a four-day operation across the state.

In a statement, NSW police said they charged 648 people with serious offenses following a new high-impact operation targeting the state’s most dangerous domestic violence offenders.

Operation Amarok One in Australia's most populous state ran from Jan. 24 to Jan. 27, said the police in a statement published on its website.

The police said that 164 of NSW’s most wanted domestic violence offenders were also among the 648 people.

"In addition to domestic violence-related offenses, the police detected various other serious offenses, including prohibited firearm and weapon possession, drug possession and supply, with a total of 1,153 charges laid," said the police.

The police also recovered and seized 19 firearms and 49 prohibited weapons, as well as various types of illicit drugs.

“The NSW Police Force invests significant resources into responding to domestic and family violence; attending some 139,000 calls for assistance in 2022 – with more than 33,100 of those actual assaults and 17 domestic-related murders,” Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said.

“We continue to battle the perception that domestic violence is a ‘family matter’ and therefore should be treated as ‘private business.’ That is certainly not the case. It is a community matter, and we all have a part to play in stopping the senseless loss of lives due to this crime," Lanyon added.
