LG THINQ UP PERSONALIZED UPGRADES RECEIVE UL VERIFICATION

Reliability of Software Upgrade Process for LG ThinQ UP Appliances Verified by Respected Global Safety Science Company

SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics (LG) announces that the software update process for its ThinQ™ UP home appliances recently received Software Update Process Verification from UL Solutions.  LG’s first certification relating to software updates, the new verification confirms the reliability of feature update processing for products including LG’s ThinQ UP 27-inch washer, dryer and fridge, and comes after the company’s Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive (AI DD™) earned UL’s Algorithm Reproducibility Verification. Set to roll out globally this year after launching in South Korea in 2022, LG’s ThinQ UP products can be continuously upgraded with downloadable features via the LG ThinQ app.

LG THINQ UP PERSONALIZED UPGRADES RECEIVE UL VERIFICATION

LG ThinQ UP appliances can evolve to meet users everchanging needs thanks to their ability to add new features created by LG based on the analysis of users’ lifestyle and usage patterns. The easy-to-install software updates are available from the ThinQ app, which even provides tailored feature recommendations based on personal usage history and preferences. LG’s ThinQ UP personalized appliances concept means consumers can enjoy the very latest features without having to constantly ‘update’ to a brand-new appliance.

Users can select which ThinQ UP features they want to install according to their own unique needs and circumstances. Washer users with pets in the home may want to download the Pet Care Course, which has been customized to effectively remove pet-related stains and smells from clothing. A great option for those times when it is impossible to unload the washer as soon as the cycle has finished, Laundry Saver keeps the drum tumbling to prevent clothes from getting wrinkled. It can even do an additional rinse or spin post-cycle if needed. ThinQ UP refrigerator users can add Improved Nighttime Brightness Control, which adjusts the fridge’s lighting at night to a softer, gentler glow that won’t hurt their eyes.

“UL Solutions’ verification confirms the seamlessness and reliability of installing personalized upgrades that help make LG ThinQ UP – and the user experience they provide – more reliable and seamless,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG will continuously introduce new ThinQ UP features to deliver differentiated value and a better life at home.”

Brazil’s Lula to meet with Biden in February

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with his US counterpart Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. on Feb.10.

Lula met in early December with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, where he received an invitation to meet with Biden.

According to the G1 news outlet, Lula’s invitation to the US was reinforced in a phone call between his Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Lula’s first official trip abroad since assuming office on Jan 1. will take place next week, when he heads to Argentina on Jan. 24, where the former union leader will meet with Argentine President Alberto Fernandez.

In Argentina, Lula will participate in the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and also visit Uruguay.

In the near future, Lula is also expected to head to China and Portugal, although no dates have been confirmed according to G1.

Lula has previously highlighted the need to strengthen Brazil’s position internationally following what analysts have described as former President Jair Bolsonaro’s isolationist policies regarding the South American nation’s foreign policy.

Last month, Vieira touched on Brazil’s foreign policy, underscoring that Lula is keen to “rebuild bridges” with “traditional partners” including the US, China and the European Union and resume cooperation with Africa.

China and the US are two of Brazil’s biggest trade partners.

European Parliament calls for listing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist entity

The European Parliament urged the European Union on Thursday to place Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on its terrorist list, according to the website of the Strasbourg-based legislative body.

In a nonbinding resolution, EU parliamentarians managed to get a large majority to urge the EU’s 27 member states to take such a punitive move.

The resolution said the Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for human dignity and the democratic aspirations of its own citizens as well as its support to Russia “necessitate further adjustments in the EU’s position towards Iran.”

“All those responsible for human rights violations should face EU sanctions, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps should be on the EU terrorist list,” the members of the European Parliament (MEPs) urged.

They also called on the EU and its member states to add the IRGC’s subsidiary forces, including the paramilitary Basij militia and the Quds Force, to the EU terrorist list.

Any country in which the IRGC deploys military, economic or informational operations should sever and outlaw ties with this organization, the resolution said.

The MEPs also urged the EU to expand its sanctions list to cover all individuals and entities responsible for human rights violations and their family members, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Ebrahim Raisi, Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri and all foundations linked to the IRCG.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament condemned “in the strongest terms the death sentences against and executions of peaceful protesters in Iran and called on the Iranian authorities to end the crackdown on their own citizens.”

The MEPs urged the authorities of the Iranian regime “to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters sentenced to death.”

They also “condemn the fact that criminal proceedings and the death penalty have been weaponized by the regime to stamp out dissent and to punish people for exercising their basic rights.”

“Those responsible for the killing of hundreds of protesters must be brought to justice,” they added.

The resolution also called for “the expansion of restrictive measures” against Iran as it continues to provide unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and plans to provide surface-to-surface missiles to Russia.

Finally, the MEPs expressed “deep concern over the structural transnational repression carried out by the authorities of the Islamic Republic, which includes espionage and assassinations, against the Iranian diaspora living in the EU.”

They called on the EU and the member states “to protect those affected more robustly against such repression.”

The European Parliament’s resolution comes ahead of Monday’s meeting of EU foreign ministers, where additional sanctions against Tehran are expected to be adopted.

US top court says it cannot find source of landmark abortion reversal leak

The US Supreme Court said Thursday that it has been unable to identify who leaked the draft majority opinion that ultimately ended decades of federal abortion protections.

The court said in an unsigned statement that the early release of the landmark opinion is "one of the worst breaches of trust in its history."

The then-draft opinion was published in full by the Politico news website, which also extensively reported on it a month before the opinion was officially released.

The incident marks the first time in the court's history that a draft opinion had been leaked to the press.

"The leak was no mere misguided attempt at protest. It was a grave assault on the judicial process," the court said. "It is no exaggeration to say that the integrity of judicial proceedings depends on the inviolability of internal deliberations."

Chief Justice John Robert directed the court's marshal and staff to carry out an investigation into the source of the leak.

But the court said that after extensive interviews with the 82 people who had access to the document during the months-long probe, "the team has to date been unable to identify a person responsible by a preponderance of the evidence."

"After months of diligent analysis of forensic evidence and interviews of almost 100 employees, the Marshal’s team determined that no further investigation was warranted," the court said.

The court hired an outside consultant to go over the marshal’s findings, and former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a separate statement that his office determined the investigation was "thorough," adding he cannot "identify any additional useful investigative measures."

Shooting in Georgia leaves 5 dead, 5 injured

At least five people, including a police officer, were killed and five others injured on Friday in a shooting in eastern Georgia, according to authorities.

The attacker opened fire from the balcony of an apartment in the city of Sagarejo, some 58 kilometers (36 miles) east of the capital Tbilisi, said an Interior Ministry statement.

“The accused also opened fire in the direction of employees of the Interior Ministry … one of whom was also killed,” the statement said.

After additional security teams were mobilized at the scene, the accused “presumably committed suicide with a firearm,” it added.

Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri also said that the attacker had served in the Georgian Armed Forces from 2006 to 2021.
