Climate activists block arrival of Davos forum participants at Swiss airport

Climate activists from the Dept for Climate group blocked the airport in Altenrhein in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen on Monday morning. Police are also on the scene.

The activists are blocking the airport because every year participants attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) land there before traveling onwards to Davos.

According to the St. Gallen cantonal police, however, there are currently no restrictions for passengers.

“Flight operations are continuing. We are monitoring the situation and will see how we proceed after the next meeting,” a spokesman for the St. Gallen cantonal police told the daily 20 Minuten.

Airport operator People’s Air Group confirmed to Swiss daily Blick that flight operations have not been affected so far. It said the airport was ensuring that operations were as unrestricted as possible.

With climate activists blocking the exit, passengers who had just landed were stuck in their cars, he said. The activists have erected a wooden structure in the airport parking lot.

With the blockade, the activists want to draw attention to the elites such as the states of the Global North and corporations, which in their eyes are responsible for the debt in the Global South and the climate crisis.

In concrete terms, the activists are therefore demanding the unconditional cancelation of the foreign debt of the countries of the Global South.

In addition, the polluters should pay for the losses and damages they cause in the countries most affected by the climate crisis.

The activists see themselves as part of the global campaign Make Them Pay.

Israeli army demolishes 18 Palestinian-owned structures

The Israeli army on Monday demolished 18 Palestinian-owned structures north of the occupied East Jerusalem.

Speaking to Anadolu, Abdullah Salaheddin, the director of the Hizma municipality, said that without any prior notice, the Israeli army demolished the structures which include stores and car maintenance workshops.

He added that the Israeli authorities claimed that the demolition was carried out to expand the road where the structures exist.

Salaheddin also said that more than 100 Palestinian families are affected by the demolitions.

Meanwhile, the official Wafa news agency reported that at least 15 Palestinians were detained by the Israeli forces from several areas in the occupied West Bank.

Three Palestinians, including one child, were injured in Jenin and Bethlehem during the Israeli raids, according to the news agency.

The Israeli army frequently carries out wide-ranging arrest campaigns across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians.

Chelsea sign Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea signed Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk in a multi-year deal Sunday, the English Premier League club confirmed.

“Mykhailo Mudryk has finalized his move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea after agreeing personal terms with the club,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“The Ukrainian international, who turned 22 earlier this month, has put pen to paper on an eight-and-a-half year contract with the Blues to seal his move to Stamford Bridge,” it added.

Shakhtar announced that the club will receive €70 million ($75 million) for the player and another € 30 million ($32 million) is envisaged as a bonus payment.

Mudryk said he is happy to join Chelsea.

“This is a huge club, in a fantastic league and it is a very attractive project for me at this stage of my career. I’m excited to meet my new team-mates and I’m looking forward to working and learning under (manager) Graham Potter and his staff,” he said.

Rinat Akhmetov, Shakhtar Donetsk president, published a statement about Mudryk’s transfer on Monday.

He said the club will allocate $25 million to help Ukrainian soldiers and their families.

“I am allocating $25 million today to help our soldiers, defenders, and their families,” Akhmetov said, adding: “The money will be used to cover different needs — from providing medical and prosthetic treatment and psychological support to meeting specific requests.”

Mudryk scored 12 goals and made 17 assists in 44 matches for Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won a Ukrainian Cup in 2019.

He played eight matches for his native Ukraine.

Mudryk is Chelsea’s fifth signing in the 2023 winter transfer window as the Blues previously acquired Ivorian forward David Datro Fofana, Portuguese forward Joao Felix, French defender Benoit Badiashile, and Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
