Texas police fires officer over shooting teen multiple times

A US police officer was fired on Saturday after he shot at and injured a 17-year-old teenager sitting in a car in the state of Texas.

Shocking footage of the incident released by the Police Department shows James Brennand firing six shots at Erik Cantu who was with his girlfriend. As Cantu tried to speed away, the officer fired four more shots.

In a video statement, police training commander Alyssa Campos said that the San Antonio officer, who had been in the force for less than a year, violated his training and police procedures.

A Texas prosecutor also said that there is not enough evidence to file charges against the teenager, who is being treated at a hospital.

Kerch Bridge: Key passage linking Crimea to Russia

A huge explosion early Saturday hit the Kerch Bridge, a key supply route for Russia which was built after it annexed Crimea in 2014.

An ensuing fire caused the suspension of traffic and bus and train services.

The bridge, the longest in Europe, crosses the Kerch Strait on the Sea of Azov.

It cost $3.7 billion and has a length of 19 kilometers (12 miles), making it the longest bridge built by Russia.

The bridge — a pair of parallel bridges, a road and a railroad — is a symbol of the annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s prestige projects. It is a crucial logistical link for the Russian army.

It was a key transport link providing military materials to the Russian army deployed in southern Ukraine, as well as transporting forces to the area.

The attack is considered a nasty blow to the Russian military prestige and supply chains for the invasion of the peninsula.

The bridge allows Russia to maintain its strategic domain in Crimea and to put lasting economic and political pressure on Ukraine.

The road-and-rail bridge, built upon instructions by Putin, was inaugurated in 2018, while the railway bridge was opened two years later.

Ukraine, the EU and the US have all condemned the bridge connecting Russia to a peninsula they say is under illegal occupation.

In 2014, Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula after a controversial referendum. Moscow has since pursued a policy of integrating the peninsula through transport and infrastructure projects.

Türkiye, as well as the UN General Assembly, views the annexation as illegal.

Three people were killed in the “truck bombing” on the strategic bridge, according to Russian investigators.

Russia’s Investigative Committee added that the driver of the truck is a resident of the Krasnodar Krai region in Russia.

German far-right party protest energy crisis

Thousands of far-right AfD (Alternative for Germany) supporters marched Saturday in Berlin to protest the government’s energy policy.

AfD is hoping to instrumentalize the energy crisis and surging inflation with ongoing protests in the coming months to attract more potential voters under the motto: “Energy security and protection against inflation – our country first.”

Demonstrators could be seen carrying German and Russian flags as well far-right symbols, according to Berlin’s RBB broadcasting network.

They also held posters with slogans that read: “Stop government madness” and “ yes to nuclear power.”

Protesters demanded the resignation of the center-left coalition government comprised of the Social Democrats, Greens and the Free Democrats, branding them as the “enemies of the state.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of mainly leftist counter-demonstrators took to the city’s government district streets to protest the AfD demonstration.

They accused the AfD of politically exploiting the rising cost of energy and food.

While hundreds of police were deployed to keep both sides from each other, there were some reports of minor skirmishes.

Serbia to tackle energy crises with diversified solutions: President

President Aleksandar Vucic said Saturday that Serbia is working on new oil storage facilities and plans to construct a new oil pipeline to Hungary to tackle the global energy crisis,.

Vucic’s remarks came in an address to the nation where he said Serbia is also planning to connect to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and the Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) gas pipelines

He said Serbia is working on new oil storage facilities and there are two offers.

”One of which is from the British Vitol for 400 to 500,000 tons, and the other from a consortium of our oilmen for 200,000 tons. The British Vitol is asking for special conditions for arbitration, and the consortium of our oilmen offers to build a warehouse of 200,000 tons,” he said.

Vucic said earlier this week that Serbia has warehouses filled with close to 380 million cubic meters of gas in Hungary.

Serbia purchased an additional 500 million cubic meters (17.6 billion cubic feet) of gas in July from two Hungarian companies for €250 million ($252 million).

In May, Hungary announced it would allow Serbia to store natural gas in its storage facilities for the winter.

New oil pipeline to Hungary

Vucic also announced the construction of a new oil pipeline to Hungary.

”In accordance with the agreement made with the Hungarian Prime Minister (Viktor) Orban, will build an oil pipeline to the Hungarian town of Algyo with a length of up to 128 kilometers (80 miles), so that Serbia will get another direction of supply and the possibility to collect what is more favorable for her,” said Vucic.

He said the pipeline could cost up to €100 million ($97 million).

”We currently have the largest gas reserves in the history of Serbia,” said Vucic.

Serbia connecting to Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and Trans-Anatolian (TANAP) gas pipeline

Vucic said he expects Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to visit Serbia by the end of the year to discuss Serbia’s connection to the TAP or the TANAP gas pipelines.

“That is important to us because from that side we can also get hold of liquid gas from the Greek city of Alexandroupoli and we can also cover everything that we lack from the contract with the Russians,” he said.

Serbia currently has the lowest price for electricity in the region and a deal could keep rates steady and prevent an increase in prices.

The price for Serbian households is $0.086 cents per kilowatt hour, while in Bosnia Herzegovina it is $0.087.

In Albania it is up to $0.097, in Montenegro $0.105, in Croatia $0.148, and in Rome $0.545, according to Vucic.

Japanese GP: Verstappen crowned Formula 1 champion

Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday to become the 2022 Formula One world champion.

The Dutch driver won Round 18 in 3 hours 1 minute 44.004 seconds which held as 28 laps due to weather conditions at the Suzuka International Racing Course.

His second season championship in a row was determined after his opponent Charles Leclerc got time penalty — pushing him to third spot after the race ended.

“The first one is a little more emotional, the second one is more beautiful – just the season we’ve had, the 1-2’s, leading the constructors’,” Verstappen said. “It’s been a special year, and you need to remind yourself as these kind of years you don’t have very often.”

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez finished second with a difference of 27.066 seconds, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished 31.763 seconds later than Verstappen with the added time penalty.

The safety car was out in the first lap after Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel spun and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz hit the barriers.

In Lap 3, the red flag was shown, due to intensifying rainfall and as a result, all racers started to get into pit-lane until the race restarted.

The restart was suspended several times and finally the race was allowed to continue with the safety car after almost one hour. Verstappen finished the shortened 28-lap race with a comfortable lead.

Verstappen leads the driver standings with 366 points, while Leclerc placed second and Perez lays at the third spot, both with 249 points.

The constructor standings are led by Red Bull with 619 points, while Ferrari placed second with 454 points and Mercedes is at the third spot with 387 points.

The Round 19 in 2022 Formula One World Championship will be held at Circuit of The Americas in United States on Oct. 23.
