China National Silk Museum Hosts International Museum Day Forum with New Vision of Development

Türkiye’s daily power consumption up 1.18% on June 16

Daily electricity consumption in Türkiye increased by 1.18% on Thursday compared to the previous day, totaling 913,975 megawatt-hours, according to official figures of Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEIAS) on Friday.

Hourly power consumption peaked at 43,930 megawatt-hours at 15.00 local time (1200 GMT), data from TEIAS showed. The country’s electricity usage dropped to the lowest level of 29,994 megawatt-hours at 07.00 local time (0400 GMT).

Electricity production amounted to 905,411 megawatt-hours on Thursday, marking an increase of 1.14% compared to Wednesday.

Electricity production from hydro power plants constituted 21.01% of total generation, while imported coal and natural gas plants contributed 15.6% and 14.5%, respectively.

On Thursday, the country’s electricity exports amounted to 9,849 megawatt-hours and imports totaled 18,412 megawatt-hours.

Spot market natural gas prices for Thursday, June 16

The trade volume on Türkiye’s spot natural gas market showed an increase of 339% to 26.10 million Turkish liras on Thursday, Türkiye’s Energy Exchange Istanbul (EXIST) data showed on Friday.

Total trade on Wednesday amounted to 5.94 million liras.

On Thursday’s spot market, 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas cost 12,993.37 liras, while the cumulative natural gas trade volume amounted to around 2 million cubic meters.

Türkiye received 116.19 million cubic meters of pipeline gas on Thursday.

US stocks end sharply lower amid recession fears

Major US stock indexes ended sharply lower Thursday after a number of central banks around the world followed the Federal Reserve’s lead and raised interest rates to curb inflation, renewing concerns over a recession.

The Fed increased its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points Wednesday, the strongest hike since 1994.

Central banks including the Bank of England and Taiwan’s central bank followed suit and lifted rates while warning of soaring inflation and lower economic growth respectively.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 741.46 points, or 2.42%, to close at 29,927.07.

The S&P 500 lost 123.22 points, or 3.25%, to end the day at 3,666.77.

The Nasdaq was down by 453.06 points, or 4.08%, to finish at 10,646.10.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was up 11.24% at 32.95 as of 5.19 p.m. Eastern Time (2119GMT).

The dollar index dropped 1.28% to 103.82 and the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 5.89% to 3.195%.

Precious metals were meanwhile on the positive side as gold rose 1.25% to $1,856.74 per ounce and silver was up 2.5% at $21.95.

Global benchmark Brent crude was trading at $119 a barrel for a 0.16% decline while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was at $117.06 – a 1.52% increase.

Japan’s central bank maintains ultra-low rates

Amid interest rate hikes by major central banks globally, Japan’s central bank on Friday decided to maintain its ultra-low interest rates, at minus 0.1% for short-term and 0% for long-term.

The Bank of Japan will also continue to conduct fixed-rate purchase operations for consecutive days at 0.25%.

It will purchase exchange-traded funds worth 12 trillion yen ($89.6 billion) and Japan real estate investment trusts worth 180 billion yen.

“The Bank will purchase CP (commercial paper) and corporate bonds at about the same pace as prior to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, so that their amounts outstanding will gradually return to pre-pandemic levels, namely, about 2 trillion yen for CP and about 3 trillion yen for corporate bonds,” it added.

The bank said that it will continue with Quantitative and Qualitative Monetary Easing (QQE) with Yield Curve Control for the inflation target of 2%.

The country’s annual inflation rate was 2.5% in April.

“The Bank will support financing, mainly of firms, and maintain stability in financial markets, and will not hesitate to take additional easing measures if necessary,” it said.

While the Japanese yen has lost nearly 20% of its value against the US dollar since March, this week, the Japanese currency slumped to 135.6, the lowest level since August 1998.

Earlier this week, Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki expressed concern on the yen’s rapid decline and said the government would coordinate appropriate action with the central bank.

Oil down as multiple interest rate hikes raise demand woes

Oil prices fell slightly Friday as concerns about global economic growth weighed on markets in the aftermath of multiple interest rate hikes around the world, coupled with demand worries as China pursues its COVID-19 measures.

International benchmark Brent crude was trading at $119.74 per barrel at 0701GMT for a 0.05% decrease after closing the previous session at $119.81 a barrel.

American benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $117.44 per barrel at the same time for a 0.12% loss after the previous session closed at $117.59 a barrel.

In an attempt to fight rising consumer prices, several countries have raised interest rates.

Fueling oil demand concerns, the US Federal Reserve raised its key policy rate on Wednesday, the largest since 1994. Within hours, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and others announced rate hikes, followed by Switzerland and the UK on Thursday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Russia does not rule out further increases in oil prices by the end of the year, “though everything will depend on the demand and supply balance.”

Novak added that Russia remains optimistic about global demand despite the uncertainty surrounding possible COVID-19-related lockdowns in China.

Investor woes about weak demand reinforced further after reports that China is set to ramp up anti-pandemic efforts in Hong Kong to tackle a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

On Thursday, US Ambassador Nicholas Burns told the Brookings Institution that the lockdowns were disrupting supply chains and making foreign businesses wait before considering further investment.

A survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai also confirmed Burns’s argument.

According to the survey, one quarter of US firms were scaling back investment plans and nearly all were dropping revenue forecasts after the lockdown in the business hub.

The reports that the US is placing new sanctions on Iran limited further losses.

In an e-mailed note, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) commodity strategist Daniel Hynes recalled that the US Treasury Department said it sanctioned a network of Iranian petrochemical producers as well as front companies in China and the UAE which support companies it says broker petrochemical sales abroad.

“The market has been watching negotiations between the West and Iran in anticipation of revival of the nuclear deal in recent months,” he said, noting that this brought back into focus the ongoing supply side issues in the market.

Monthly assessment report presents grim outlook for South Korean economy

The South Korean Finance Ministry’s monthly assessment released on Friday painted a grim picture of the country’s economy due to skyrocketing oil and commodities prices caused by the protracted Russia-Ukraine war, local media reported.

Market volatility and global economic downside risks have increased due to the Federal Reserve’s accelerating monetary tightening and global supply chain disruptions, said Yonhap News Agency, citing the economic assessment report.

“Amid a continued buildup in price pressure, there are concerns about the economic slowdown due to sluggish investment and the weak recovery of exports,” the report said.

In May, the country’s consumer prices jumped by 5.4%, the highest rise in 14 years.

The government also lowered its 2022 economic growth outlook to 2.6% from its earlier 3.1% estimate in December, according to the report.

The ministry is concerned that the current situation could stifle the investment and export growth of the fourth-largest economy in Asia.

“It is hard to emphatically say the economy has entered the phase of a downturn, but the government has raised caution against a possible economic slowdown,” said Lee Seung-han, a ministry official, according to the agency.
