Turkish president to discuss peace talks with Ukrainian, Russian leaders

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday he plans to call his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts and discuss the holding of peace talks at the leadership level in Turkiye.

“We have planned to talk with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy again one or other day. With this meeting, hopefully, we plan to continue the process in Istanbul at the level of leaders,” Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul.

Erdogan said the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine yielded “positive” results so far, but not exactly as it should have been.

Noting that the negotiation process will get better, he said: “We are not hopeless.”

Talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul on March 29 were seen as a breakthrough in the push to halt hostilities that, according to the UN figures, have claimed the lives of at least 2,345 civilians and left 2,919 more injured since Feb. 24.

After the Istanbul meeting, a Ukrainian negotiator said Kyiv wants Turkiye among the countries that will be guarantors in any deal with Moscow.

In March, Turkiye also brought together the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers in its southern resort city of Antalya, the first meeting of senior government officials from the two sides since the start of the war.

Regarding Turkiye’s latest anti-terror operation in northern Iraq, he said security forces have neutralized 45 PKK terrorists in Operation Claw-Lock, inflicting agonizing pain upon the terror group.

He said three Turkish soldiers were also killed during the operation, adding that “we will continue our fight against terrorism steadily and tirelessly.”

PKK terrorists often hide out in northern Iraq to plot cross-border attacks in Turkiye.

In 2020, Turkiye launched operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle in the border regions of northern Iraq to ensure the safety of the Turkish people and the frontiers.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

Northern Cyprus leader gives mandate of forming gov’t to premier Sucuoglu

Northern Cypriot President Ersin Tatar on Friday gave the mandate of forming the new government to National Unity Party (UBP) Chairman and Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoglu.

Tatar received the heads of political parties as part of efforts to form a government, according to Turkish News Agency-Cyprus (TAK).

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Sucuoglu said they plan to complete the government forming process without wasting time and present the new Cabinet list by Monday morning.

They aim to complete the process by the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha, Sucuoglu stressed, saying they will first meet with the coalition partners Friday evening, and their program will be clarified after that meeting.

Tatar, for his part, said: “As a result of the evaluations and negotiations, I came to the conclusion that the only person who can form the government is Sucuoglu.”

On Wednesday, the president accepted the resignation of the government.

A statement was released about the government’s resignation following a meeting between Tatar and Sucuoglu, TAK reported.

The coalition government of the UBP, Rebirth Party, and Democrat Party was formed on Feb. 21 under the chairmanship of Sucuoglu, and approved by Tatar.

Last October, Ersan Saner, then-prime minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), submitted his resignation to the president.

Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, despite a series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement.

Ethnic attacks starting in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety.

In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aiming at Greece’s annexation led to Turkiye’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence.

The TRNC was founded in 1983. It has seen an on-and-off peace process in recent years, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland under the auspices of guarantor countries Turkiye, Greece, and the UK.

The Greek Cypriot administration entered the EU in 2004, the same year Greek Cypriots thwarted the UN’s Annan plan to end the decades-long dispute.

Turkiye hails ‘deep-rooted’ bilateral relations with Kuwait

Turkiye hails “deep-rooted” relations with Kuwait and aspires for more bilateral cooperation, the Turkish envoy to the Gulf state said on Thursday.

“The friendship and love between the people of Turkey and Kuwait is deep-rooted,” the Turkish Embassy in Kuwait quoted Ayse Hilal Sayan Koytak as saying.

She met with Turkish and Kuwaiti businesspeople at an iftar gathering organized by the Kuwait chapter of MUSIAD, an association of industrialists and businessmen in Turkiye.

“I say with pleasure that Turkish-Kuwaiti relations have reached high levels,” the diplomat said, adding that Ankara aims to strengthen cooperation with Kuwait in all fields.

Koytak said the two countries had relatively overcome the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on economic ties, and the volume of bilateral trade increased by 31.5% in 2021, compared to the previous year.

She explained that Kuwaiti investments in Turkiye totaled $2 billion, while the volume of projects carried out by Turkish contracting companies in Kuwait stand at $8.4 billion.

Regarding tourism, Koytak said a large number of Kuwaiti tourists visit Turkiye, and Kuwaitis are also among the top foreigners buying real estate in Turkiye.

She underlined the Turkish Embassy’s readiness to continue to provide full support to further develop bilateral relations.
