Chelsea advance to English FA Cup semifinal

Chelsea advanced to the 2022 English FA Cup semifinal after beating lower division club Middlesbrough 2-0 in a quarterfinal match Saturday.

Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku scored the opener in the 15th minute as he finished in the six-yard-box at Riverside Stadium. Lukaku was assisted by Mason Mount.

In minute 31, Moroccan attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech fired a left-footed shot outside that scored the insurance goal.

Other semifinalists will be unveiled after matches Sunday in the quarterfinal.

Crystal Palace vs. Everton; Southampton vs. Manchester City and Nottingham Forest vs. Liverpool.

The FA Cup semifinals will be held April 16.

London’s Wembley Stadium will stage the 2022 final on May 14.

Inter Milan take home draw with Fiorentina; alarm bells ringing for Nerazzurri

Italian Serie A title contenders Inter Milan frustrated fans after a 1-1 home draw Saturday with Fiorentina.

Fiorentina’s Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira scored in the penalty area to give the visitors the lead in the 50th minute at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.

Inter equalized five minutes later as Dutch midfielder Denzel Dumfries scored on a header.

The points for the match were shared.

During the match, Torreira played with a swab in his mouth after the 26-year-old suffered a horrific injury.

After the match, Torreira put his picture on Twitter as the Uruguayan lost one of his maxillary central incisor teeth.

Third-place Inter have 60 points in 29 matches.

The Nerazzurri are six points behind leaders and archrivals AC Milan.

Fiorentina are in the eighth spot with 47 points.

AC Milan beat Cagliari 1-0 on Saturday as Algerian midfielder Ismael Bennacer scored the winning goal in Sardinia.

Second-place Napoli beat Udinese 2-1 at home.

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen scored two goals for the Naples club. Spanish winger Gerard Deulofeu scored for Udinese.

Napoli have 63 points in 30 matches to chase AC Milan in the Serie A standings.

British MMA fighter Aspinall defeats Volkov in UFC heavyweight bout

British Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Tom Aspinall beat Alexander Volkov from Russia in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 204 heavyweight bout.

Aspinall, 28, defeated Volkov, 33, by submission in the first round to bag his 12th career win in the main event at London’s O2 Arena.

Aspinall, who has five consecutive UFC fight wins since 2020, is ranked 11th in the UFC heavyweight standings. Volkov is sixth in the globe with 34 MMA fight wins.

The Russian fighter lost 10 fights since 2009.

Aspinall is 12-2.

The UFC returned to London for the first time since March 2019.

The 2020 fight was previously canceled for the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2021 event was relocated to Las Vegas for the same concerns.

Lakers’ LeBron James becomes NBA’s 2nd all-time highest scorer

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James scored 38 points against Washington Wizards on Saturday and became NBA’s second all-time highest scorer.

The Lakers faced a 127-119 loss to the Wizards at Washington’s Capital One Arena, but it was a historic night for James.

The 37-year-old small forward tallied 36,947 career points in 1,363 games to surpass Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone on NBA’s all-time scoring list.

Malone, 58, who was a longtime Jazz power forward, scored 36,928 in 1,476 games and ranks third currently.

Four-time NBA champion James now trails only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

NBA great Abdul-Jabbar, 74, scored 38,387 points in 1,560 games to be the league’s all-time top scorer.

A former Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers forward, James should score 1,440 points to equal Abdul-Jabbar’s record.

On Saturday evening, James displayed a stellar performance for the Lakers with 38 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook scored 22 points, took 10 rebounds and made eight assists.

Malik Monk added 17 points for the losing team.

For Wizards, seven players scored in double digits.

Latvian forward-center Kristaps Porzingis led the Wizards, scoring 27 points.

Washington guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Wizards duo Deni Avdija and Daniel Gafford clocked up 17 points each.

The Wizards have 30-40 win/loss record to be in the 11th position in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Lakers won 30 games but lost 41 others to rank ninth in the West.
