Hornets’ Ball to replace injured Durant for 2022 NBA All-Star game

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball will be replacing the injured Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant at the 2022 NBA All-Star game scheduled for later this month.

In a statement, NBA said that Ball, 20, will play his first NBA All-Star game, replacing experienced forward Durant, who has been suffering from a knee injury.

A 12-time NBA All-Star, Durant, 33, would not be able to play in this year’s NBA All-Star game due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Durant has been ineligible for the Nets’ last 11 games as he last played on Jan. 15 when the Nets beat the New Orleans Pelicans 120-105 in Brooklyn.?

Ball, the 2021 NBA Rookie, is now among the East reserves.

Meanwhile, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, who was previously picked as an All-Star reserve, will replace Durant as a starter in the East pool.?

Separately, San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray, 25, joined the Western Conference team after Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green was injured.

Murray was selected for an NBA All-Star for the first time.

Green, the 31-year-old power forward, will miss this year’s All-Star Game for a lower back/disc injury, NBA said. Green has been to three all-star teams (2016-2018).

The 71st NBA All-Star Game will be held on Feb. 20, in Cleveland.

Saudi Arabia, US discuss efforts for political solution in Yemen

Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir held talks in Riyadh with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, Yael Lempert, to discuss efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Yemen.

A statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry said the talks between the two diplomats took up regional and international developments.

The US Department of State said in a statement that the discussions, which were held on Monday, also dwelt on a host of regional issues, including the crisis in Lebanon.

A diplomatic crisis erupted between Lebanon and the Gulf states in October over criticism of the Yemen war by then Information Minister George Kordahi.

Lempert’s visit to Saudi Arabia came amid attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a military campaign against Houthi rebels since 2015, one year after the Iran-aligned rebels overran much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.

The eight-year conflict has created one of the world’s worst man-made humanitarian crises, with nearly 80% of the country, or about 30 million people, in need of humanitarian assistance and protection.

More than 13 million are in danger of starvation, according to UN estimates.

Israel’s top security official visits US for Iran talks

Israel’s National Security Adviser Eyal Hulata has travelled to the United States for talks with officials there, including his US counterpart Jake Sullivan, on Iran’s nuclear program.

“We will continue the deep and close dialogue between Israel and the United States in general, and on the Iranian issue in particular,” Hulata said in statements cited by Haaretz newspaper.

Hulata admitted that there are differences with Washington on several issues, but said that “coordination is deep, important and strategic and we are working on it.”

Israel has repeatedly voiced rejection of talks between Iran and world powers on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal.

“Israel will maintain freedom of action in any situation, with or without an agreement,” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Sunday.

Iran and P4+1 (Russia, China, France, the UK, and Germany) held several rounds of talks in the Austrian capital, Vienna, to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal.

Under the agreement, Tehran has committed to limit its nuclear activity to civilian purposes and in return, world powers agreed to drop their economic sanctions against Iran.

However, the US, under former President Donald Trump, unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to stop complying with the nuclear deal.

Oil prices show limited rises on prospect of sanctions lift on Iran

Oil prices experienced limited increases on Tuesday, pressured by the possible removal of Iranian sanctions should the US agree to do so in the resumption of talks with Iran.

International benchmark Brent crude was trading at $92.75 per barrel at 0615 GMT with a 0.06% gain after closing the previous session at $92.69 a barrel.

American benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded at $91.45 per barrel at the same time for a 0.14% rise after it ended the previous session at $91.32 a barrel.

The US and Iran are expected to resume talks later in the day after a 10-day hiatus. The US had restored some sanctions waivers, but Iran wants the removal of all sanctions and a guarantee that the US will not take any further retributive action.

Lifting the sanctions will allow Iran to pump more oil into the market, increasing global supplies.

Regardless, experts believe the outcome of US-Iran talks on oil prices will be temporary and that prices will likely increase further if there is a supply deficit in the global oil market.
