Istanbul hosts ‘1st’ China-Palestine international conference

ISTANBUL

Experts and academics from around the world on Saturday gathered in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul to discuss, for the first time, relations between China and Palestine as well as the country’s role and impact on the Palestine-Israel conflict.

The one-day conference is hosted by the Asia Middle East Forum in Istanbul.

“The conference will invoke the historical Chinese-Palestinian relations and standing on the most important political and cultural ties,” the organizers said.

During the event, “China’s vision and strategy and the nature of its renaissance and development role at the level of West Asia” will be discussed.

“The moot will also anticipate the Chinese role in seeking to achieve a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause,” they added.

At least 16 speakers, including those from China, are scheduled to discuss the Chinese support “against (Israel’s) occupation (in Palestine) and impact of the US-China conflict on the Palestinian cause,” along with other topics.

“The conference will also discuss Palestinian vision of the Chinese role in the Middle East,” according to the organizers.

Turkish Embassy in Pakistan celebrates 98th Republic Day

ISLAMABAD

The Turkish Embassy in Islamabad celebrated the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey on Friday.

An event was held in Islamabad that was attended by Pakistan Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Hussain Chaudhry, ministers, lawmakers, diplomats, civilians and defense officials.

Chaudhry congratulated the government and people of Turkey for Republic Day and said Pakistanis have a special love for Turkey as both countries enjoy excellent relations.

“I would like to congratulate you (Ankara Ambassador to Islamabad Mustafa Yurdakul) and the great nation of Turkey,” said Chaudhry, adding that the huge gathering showed the love of Pakistani people for Turkey.

Talking about historical relations between Pakistan and Turkey, Chaudhry said the relationship is not 73 years old but much beyond that.

“The relationship that started in 1910 to 1920 when the Muslims of the sub-continent stood with Turkey, is still as warm, as gracious and is based on love and respect to each other,” he said. “The people of Pakistan feel love when we land in Turkey, and the people of Turkey feel love when they land in Islamabad, so it’s mutual.”

He noted good relations between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Imran Khan and said they are not only good friends but have a trustworthy relationship.

“Turkey is not a country for us, but it’s a symbol of a great Muslim unity for us,” he added.

Yurdakul thanked participants for coming and said there is a reason Turkey and Pakistan celebrated together.

“This is the National Day of Turkey, the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey. But this is not only for us. I think we have a reason to celebrate together with Pakistan this beautiful occasion because we can never ever forget about what the Muslims of the subcontinent, largely today’s Pakistan, and its people have done for the survival of our country and our nation,” he said.

He read a message by Erdogan in which he congratulated his nation and friends on the occasion of the historical day.

Turkey condemns US deportation of diplomat’s murderer

ANKARA

Turkey on Saturday condemned the US extradition of Hampig Sassounian, an Armenian origin who assassinated a Turkish diplomat in Los Angeles in 1982.

Turkey learned that Sassounian was “deported to a third country,” said a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

“We consider this decision regarding the aforementioned terrorist as a grave mistake and a concession to terrorism and we once again condemn it,” Tanju Bilgic, the spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said in the written statement.

Turkish Consul General in Los Angeles Kemal Arikan was killed on Jan. 28, 1982, by Sassounian and his accomplice Krikor Saliba on behalf of an Armenian terrorist group.

Sassounian was arrested and sentenced to life in prison, while fugitive terrorist Saliba was claimed to have been killed in the Lebanese civil war in 1982.

Bilgic further said: “It is obvious that such decisions will serve to the agenda of circles seeking to glorify terrorism as a functional tool that can be used for political purposes, not to the fight against terrorism.”

Sassounian was convicted of fatally shooting Arikan while he sat in his car at an intersection in Los Angeles nearly four decades ago. However, the Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled in favor of his release on parole earlier this year.

In a related development, Sassounian was reported Friday to have arrived in Armenia.

The Public Radio of Armenia, along with other Armenian news outlets, broadcasted a message by Sassounian confirming his arrival in Armenia.

The vast majority of the attacks on Turkish diplomats and citizens were conducted by the ASALA and JCAG terrorist groups.

The assassinations took place in the US, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Portugal, Iran, and the UK.

At least 58 Turkish nationals, including 31 diplomats, were martyred by Armenian terrorist groups, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

8,585 terrorists of 102 nationalities deported from Turkey since 2011

Turkey has deported a total of 8,585 terrorists of 102 nationalities since 2011 as part of the efforts to ensure the country’s security within and across the border, the Interior Ministry announced on Saturday.

In a statement, the ministry said the terrorists had left their home countries to join ranks of terror groups such as Daesh/ISIS or PYD/PKK.

Some 44 US nationals and 1,075 EU member country nationals were deported over the past decade.

As part of Turkey’s fight against terrorism, 126 terrorists from 12 EU countries were deported in 2019, followed by 95 terrorists from eight EU countries last year, and 61 from eight EU countries in the first 10 months of this year.

Those deported to countries of origin in the last three years are mostly from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Romania, and the UK, the statement added.

In 2013, Turkey became one of the first countries to declare Daesh/ISIS a terror group.

Daesh/ISIS terrorists have carried out multiple attacks against Turkey, including at least 10 suicide bombings, seven bombings, and four armed attacks, which killed 315 people and injured hundreds of others.

In response, Turkey launched military and police operations at home and abroad to prevent further attacks.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU — has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants.

Palestinians ready to engage with Chinese to tell them our story’

Palestinians are ready to engage with the Chinese government and people to “tell them our story,” speakers and experts told an Istanbul conference on Saturday.

However, a formal engagement with Beijing also requires platforms and vibrant activism, they added.

“We are ready and willing to engage with Chinese lawmakers to explain our story,” said Sheikh Hamid Al-Ahmar, addressing the first international conference on China and the Palestinian cause.

Al-Ahmar is the president of the Association of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds.

He also said Palestinians need to “take into consideration China’s Belt and Road Initiative which requires pure environment without violence and support from everybody.”

“We can build on Pakistan’s relation with China to help Palestine,” he suggested.

“Parliamentarians for Al-Quds look forward to an invitation from the Chinese side to engage with them on Palestine,” he added.

Mousa Abu Marzook, the vice-president of the Palestinian group Hamas, said Palestinians have “ethical, most organized resistance which defends our people.”

“Latest battle for Al-Quds is another example of it,” he said.

Earlier this year in May, Israel launched fresh attacks on Gaza Strip, killing nearly 300 people, including women and children, and left behind a trail of destruction. Health centers and media offices, as well as schools, were among the structures targeted.

Calling Hamas a “main player” in the Palestinian conflict, Marzook said the group has a relationship with “many people in public as well as behind the cameras, we appreciate that gesture.”

He said Palestinians look to a multi-polar world “where we do not have to face wrongs done by the US,” warning China that its “relations with Israel may have short term benefits but it will harm in long term.”

“Roots of terrorism lie in Israel,” Marzook alleged.

“We have historic relations with China and want Beijing away from Israel (…) And we want to enhance bilateral relations with Beijing,” he added.

Referring to the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces from Afghanistan, Marzook said Beijing is going to “fill gap vacuum like this.”

He told Anadolu Agency that Hamas enjoyed the relationship with Chinese people in the past “but it has come down in past one decade because of growing Beijing-Israel relations and opposition by the Palestinian Authority to our relations with Beijing.”

“After the battle of Saif Al-Quds, they (Chinese) contacted us and we are going to make good relations with China,” he added, referring to the latest attacks by Israel against Gaza.

China would need allies in new Cold War era

Sami Al-Arian, Palestinian academic and activist, told the conference the US “will not allow China to yield influence,” referring to forming of new military alliances around China by Washington.

“The US is forming military alliances to besiege China,” he said, adding that Washington “does not allow any country to be neutral.”

“Australia wanted to remain neutral but was forced to choose between security and trade,” he said, referring to the recent AUKUS military pact among the US, UK, and Australia.

Al-Arian, who leads the Istanbul-based Center for Islam and Global Affairs think tank, said that the US has 11 military fleets, and “seven are rotating around the world while Beijing is now building Blue Water Navy to counter Washington.”

Keeping in view the situation which the US is creating around China, al-Arian said, “Beijing would need allies to ward off the pressure on China in new Cold War era.”

“Supporting the struggle of Palestine along the struggle of Kashmiris in their struggle against fascist India would endear China to the Muslim world and defeat the attempt (of the US) to isolate China. But China also needs to resolve the problem of the Uyghurs in a balanced and fair way to receive the support of the Muslim world and beyond,” said Al-Arian, who is also a public affairs professor at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University.

“China has to choose to side with people,” he added.

Referring to the economic cooperation of countries like Turkey, Pakistan, and Iran with China, al-Arian said: “This could turn into possible military alliances.”

“It is in the best interest of China to support Palestine and create dynamics in the region and change nature of the conflict,” he said.

Struggle for Pakistani homeland bedrock for support to Palestine

Mustafa Hyder Sayed, who leads Pakistan-China Institute, told the participants the unprecedented support for Palestine in Pakistan was “because the forefathers of the country themselves struggled for an independent state led by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.”

Dubbing the Palestinian conflict “a very black and white issue,” he said the issue was “not about Islam or religion but it is about humanity, human rights, right to life for next generation of Palestinians who do not know whether their children will survive.”

Sayed urged a formalized engagement by Palestinians with Beijing.

“There is no reason that China will not take a strong stand on Palestine, however, it requires coordinated efforts from countries that want to take it forward,” Sayed said, asking Palestinians to use the upcoming China-Arab summit for lobbying with Chinese people.

Gao Shangtao, the director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the China Foreign Affairs Ministry University, told the conference that China supports the two-state solution on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestine state.

Turkish commandos storm cave, capture 4 PKK terrorists in northern Iraq

Turkish commandos captured at least four PKK terrorists from a cave they stormed in northern Iraq, military sources said on Saturday.

As part of the ongoing Pence-Yildirim (Claw-Thunder) Operation, Turkish commandos stormed the cave on a hill of 1,917 meters (6,289 feet) height in the Avasin area, sources in the country’s National Defense Ministry said.

The terrorists immediately surrendered after realizing they have nowhere to flee as the commandos landed by helicopter at their hideout, they added.

According to the sources, the commandos carried out a thorough search of the cave, which had numerous rooms, and seized arms and ammunition, including two anti-aircraft machine guns, seven AK-47 rifles among 12 rifles, one M-16 and one sniper rifle, two PKM machine guns aka Bixi, two rocket launchers, and a large quantity of ammunition for these weapons.

The PKK terror group often hides out in northern Iraq, just across Turkey’s southern border, to plot terror attacks in Turkey.

The Pence operations are a series of offensives Turkey has carried out since 2019 against terrorist organizations in northern Iraq, particularly the PKK.

Operations Pence-Kaplan and Pence-Kartal were initiated in June last year, while Pence-Simsek and Pence-Yildirim were launched this April in Iraq’s Metina and Avasin-Basyan regions.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU — has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is PKK’s Syrian offshoot.
