US Open to see all-teen final in women’s singles

The 2021 US Open will see an all-teenage final in women’s singles as 18-year-old Emma Raducanu will play against 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez on Saturday.

UK’s Raducanu beat Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday in the semifinal held at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Earlier in the day, Canada’s Fernandez booked her place in the final as she shocked Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Unseeded Fernandez, who turned 19 this week, won the match with the sets of 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.

It will be the first Grand Slam final of Raducanu and Fernandez.

The US Open said the champion will have the 2021 trophy and $2.5 million money prize. The runner-up, meanwhile, will return home with $1.25 million.

It will be the first all-teen US Open final since the 1999 edition of the major tournament when US national Serena Williams beat her Swiss opponent Martina Hingis to claim the title in New York.

Turkish Super Lig: Trabzonspor aim to extend winning streak at home

Trabzonspor on Sunday will seek their fourth victory as they face Galatasaray in week four of the Turkish Super Lig.

The game will kick off at 8 p.m. local time (1700GMT) at Trabzonspor’s Senol Günes Spor Kompleksi.

At the end of matchday three, the home side collected nine points with three wins, putting them at the top of the standings.

By winning in two and drawing one, the Lions are ranked 4th with seven points.

Galatasaray’s Sofiane Feghouli, Arda Turan, and Omar Elabdellaoui will not play due to injuries as Marcao will miss the clash due to red card suspension.

For Trabzonspor, Gervinho will not play as he is injured.

Meanwhile, second-placed Fenerbahce will host Demir Grup Sivasspor on Sunday, and fourth-placed Besiktas will face Oznur Kablo Yeni Malatyaspor at the Vodafone Park.

Dutch football manager Hiddink announces retirement from coaching

Dutch football manager Guus Hiddink announced his retirement from coaching on Thursday.

The 74-year-old said in a Dutch TV program that he ended his coaching career for unachieved goals at Curacao national team, and contracting coronavirus recently.

Curacao is an island in the oceanic Caribbean Sea and located in north of Venezuela.

In his career, Hiddink managed Real Madrid, Chelsea, Valencia, and PSV Eindhoven.

He was a Turkey manager in 2010-2011 when the national team failed to qualify for UEFA EURO 2012.

He also coached Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia.

Turkish National Football Team part ways with head coach Senol Gunes

The Turkish Football Federation confirmed Friday that they had parted ways with national team manager Senol Gunes in the wake of poor results.

Gunes, whose contract ended by mutual consent, was under fire from sports officials and fans alike after Turkey suffered a huge 6-1 loss to the Netherlands on Tuesday in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying game.

Following the historic defeat, Turkey dropped to the number three spot in the group with 11 points.

It was a devastating defeat but not the heaviest one for the Turkish team, as England toppled Turkey 8-0 twice, in 1984 and 1987.

The federation thanked the 69-year-old Gunes and wished him success in his future endeavors.

Turkey’s unemployment rate at 12% in July

The number of unemployed age 15 and over rose 506,000 month-on-month this July to 3.9 million.

During the same period, employment climbed 0.2 percentage points to 45.1%, or 28.7 million people.

The labor force participation rate stood at 51.2% this July, a rise of 0.9 percentage points from March.

Some 32.6 million people made up the labor force in July, up 631,000 people from June.

The report said the number of women participating in the workforce also climbed 1.2 percentage points from June to 33%.

On an annual basis, the main reading was down 2.4 percentage points from July 2020, the TurkStat data showed.

Enver Erkan, chief economist at Istanbul-based private investment firm Tera Yatirim, said the significant rise in unemployment was driven by the reopening of the services sector, the large supply of youth labor, and the end of government support to maintain employment such as short-time work allowances and unpaid leave cash support.

Noting that the youth unemployment rate – age 15-24 – stood at 23.1% in July, Erkan said the larger labor supply from the young population boosts the importance of creating “suitable” jobs.

Broken down by sector, some 56.2% of people were employed in services, 20.7% in industry, 17.2% in agriculture, and 6% in construction, it noted.

Employment in the agricultural and services sectors rose by 17,000 and 454,000 people, respectively, while it fell 287,000 for industry and 60,000 for the construction sector.

“As production activities may ease in industry due to global supply disruptions, we may see a similar figure in this sector in August,” Erkan said.

Lebanon’s president, premier-designate sign decree to form gov’t

After months of political deadlock, the Lebanese president and prime minister-designate Friday signed a decree to form a new government in the country.

According to a statement by the Lebanese presidency, President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati signed a decree in the presence of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to form the new government.

Lebanon’s Council of Ministers set Monday as the date for the government’s first session.

Commenting on the move, Mikati said his government will draw up a “rescue plan as soon as possible” and expressed his hope to stop the economic collapse.

This came in statements reported by Lebanese media following the announcement of the formation of the new government consisting of 24 ministers after a government vacuum that lasted 13 months.

“I will contact all international bodies to secure the simplest matters of life in Lebanon,” Mikati said.

He went on to say: “I promise the Lebanese people that we will work with a national principle, and we are not with one group against another, and I will not miss an opportunity to knock on the doors of the Arab world.”

“We must deliver what was cut off, and Lebanon belongs to this Arab world and is proud of this,” he asserted.

Mikati also pledged to hold the parliamentary elections as slated for May 8.

Earlier on Friday, two sources close to the Lebanese presidency told Anadolu Agency that Mikati will present a proposal to form a new government to Aoun at the Baabda Presidential Palace in the capital Beirut at noon.

On July 26, Aoun assigned Mikati to form the government after Saad Hariri and Mustafa Adib apologized for not completing the task due to differences between the political forces.

The Mikati government will succeed the caretaker government, which resigned six days after a catastrophic explosion hit the Port of Beirut on Aug. 4 last year.

For more than a year, political differences have prevented the formation of a government that would put an end to the economic collapse and succeed the current caretaker government headed by Hassan Diab.

For nearly two years, Lebanon has been afflicted by the worst economic crisis in its history, which led to a financial collapse and a decline in foreign exchange, reflected in shortages of fuel, medicines, and other basic commodities.
